Endodontics
Treatment of disease or injury of the dental pulp of the tooth, such as root canal.

In the past, a tooth with a diseased nerve resulted in loss of that tooth. Today, with root canal therapy, the tooth may be saved. Inside each tooth is the pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. If it is not removed, the tooth becomes infected and may be lost. Through root canal therapy, the endodontist removes the pulp, cleans and seals the root canal to protect it and places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

Root canal therapy is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one or, possibly, two visits.

Symptoms that may require root canal therapy include:

- Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure.

- Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures (after the hot or cold has been removed).

- Discoloration (a darkening) of the tooth.

- Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.

- A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call today to schedule your new patient examination. Good oral health is important to your overall health.
