Named one of the “best places for business and careers,” by Forbes Magazine, Appleton is also regarded as one of the safest and most affordable cities in the U.S. Appleton is located on the Northern edge of Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin’s largest inland lake, and is the largest city in the Fox Cities region, which has a combined population of approximately 180,000. Appleton may be a city, but when you live here, you’ll find that small-town friendliness and civic pride run strong.

Culture

More than 100 restaurants, shops and bars create a lively downtown in Appleton. The Trout Museum of Art is home to an eclectic mix of works representing over 400 years of art history. Other attractions include the Hearthstone House, the four-story mansion that was the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity at its completion in 1881. Immerse yourself in local history, including Appleton’s favorite son, Harry Houdini, at the History Museum at the Castle. Enjoy outdoor concerts and theatre during the summer or a symphony and Broadway shows at the Fox Valley Performing Arts Center year-round. Or simply spend an afternoon shopping at The Fox River Mall, the second largest mall in Wisconsin.

Education

Appleton’s school district features 17 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools and 16 charter schools. The city also has two parochial high schools.

At the post-secondary level, Appleton is home to Fox Valley Technical College, ranked among the nation’s top vocational schools, and Lawrence University, a private liberal arts college, home to a nationally-recognized conservatory of music. In addition, Concordia University Wisconsin and Rasmussen College have branch campuses in the city. The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, a two-year campus of the University of Wisconsin System, is located in nearby Menasha.

Sports and Recreation

There is always something to do outside in Appleton. With many playgrounds, parks and walking trails that connect to nearby cities it’s easy to stay active. Enjoy a round of golf at one of our nearby courses, or a day on the lake swimming or boating. In the winter, experience indoor fun at an entertainment center, ice or roller skating, sledding hills, or cross-country skiing.

For sports fans, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and nearby Kaukauna’s Wisconsin International Raceway provide plenty of entertainment.
