What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a way to make it more comfortable for patients who have dental anxiety. It makes it a little more comfortable for them when we’re doing their procedures, and it also eliminates the need for multiple visits.

What Types of Treatments Are Tied to Sedation Dentistry?

Any dental procedure can be performed under IV sedation. Usually people think about IV sedation with third molar extractions, and that's usually our typical case. However, we also do it for:

  • Fillings
  • crown preparations
  • deep cleanings
  • Dental implants

We can do it for any procedure the patient may need. It certainly is nice because you can do all the procedures in one visit, and you don't have to come back multiple times.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

The typical patient we use IV sedation on are these poor patients that are stuck in this revolving door where they have a lot of anxiety and when they finally get it to courage up enough to come and get the exam done, the amount of work that they need is overwhelming to them. And then they're not sure where to go next, and they wait a little while before they come back in again. And then when they come back in for another exam, a year or two later, now the work is doubled or there's more work needs to be done, and it's really overwhelming for them.

So with IVs sedation, it's really tailored towards those types of patients who have a lot of anxiety, but need a fair amount of work, and want all the procedures done in one visit, maybe two.

We can get them to a healthy state where they're just coming in every six months for a cleaning. That's really what we want everybody to be, and that is the ideal IV sedation patient.
